New Hope Education Centre

Soweto, Nairobi, Kenya

Vision

Bringing Hope and Education to the poorest of the poor in Soweto

New Hope Education Centre is the outcome of the vision and dream of one man, Pastor Edward Owino, who has dedicated his life and resources to help alleviate the poverty and hunger of the children and families of Soweto, Nairobi, Kenya and to give them an education which will open doors for their future

The Vision “enablers”

Meet the dedicated people God has used to fulfil this vision.

Pastor Edward and wife Hellen

School Founder and Director

Edward is the Pastor and an Apostle of New Hope Christian Fellowship that also meets in the school building. Hellen is a trained teacher and acts as an educational advisor and co-director of the school

Mark Thornthwaite

Enabler and supporter of the vision for NHEC and building adviser

Mark and Janet have been involved since 2010 when the school was no more than a dream and have dedicated much of their life and resources to bring this dream to reality

Janet Thornthwaite

Enabler and supporter of the vision for NHEC and Australian Organiser of School funding and support

As well as being the heart and driving force for this mission Janet acts as the Australian organiser and contact for fund raising and coordination of support through Global Development Group who act as the tax-exempt gateway for support gifts from Australia.

Empowering Students Through Hope, Nourishment and Learning

Many children in Soweto have little if any education and often insufficient food for their families to have even one basic meal a day.

Students Taught
per year

Although student numbers vary from year to year we reach about 350 from class 1 to class 9. After completing primary school we then try to help them find a place in a High School for years 10 to 12 (either as boarders or day students).

Qualified Teachers

Many of the slum schools in Kenya have unqualified or poorly qualified teachers. Almost all of our teachers have at least a Diploma in Education and are well qualified for their positions. Education Department inspections often are amazed at our level of education.

Programs Offered

New Hope offers teaching from Pre-school (PP1 & 2), to Primary (Yrs 1-6), and Junior Secondary JSS (Yrs 7-9) . It also helps find placements in High Schools (Yrs 10-12) for those capable of continuing and helps find sponsors to assist with their costs.
